Dr. John Ma began college studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1981. From 1981 to 1986, he earned a bachelor of arts degree. As part of the university's Junior Year Abroad Scholarship Program, I spent one year abroad at Lancaster University in Lancaster, England. From 1986 to 1990, he earned his M.D. at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C.
Beginning with a preliminary internship in internal medicine at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., from 1990 to 1991, postgraduate training was diverse. John Ma began his residency in emergency medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee in 1991, and he was Chief Resident from 1993 to 1994.

His first position was as an attending staff member at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill. John Ma was immediately promoted to the medical director at Carolina Air Care. Within a year, he advanced to the position of director of emergency ultrasonography in the Department of Emergency Medicine, as well as residency research director.
By 1997, John Ma had transferred to the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine, where he joined the attending staff of St. Luke's Hospital and then the Truman Medical Center, where he would remain for the next eight years and rise through the ranks. In his first year, he was the research director for the Department of Emergency Medicine and became the vice-chair for academic advancement in 2000. He was promoted to full vice-chair in the emergency medicine department in 2002. In 2006, Dr. John Ma was named Department Chair and Chief of Emergency Medicine.
